SOCAR Green launches hybrid renewable project to drive Azerbaijan’s decarbonisation goals

As climate change accelerates and global pressure for decarbonization increases, Azerbaijan’s energy leader, SOCAR, is taking significant measures to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and align with the national sustainability agenda. With the establishment of SOCAR Green – its dedicated renewable energy subsidiary – the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is not just embracing the energy transition but is actively spearheading it.

At the recent 2nd International Water Management Exhibition and Conference – Baku Water Week, SOCAR Green Director Elmir Musayev announced a pivotal advancement in SOCAR’s green transformation: the introduction of a pilot hybrid renewable energy project in collaboration with the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency (ADSEA).

The proposed initiative aims to:

  • Integrate onshore wind energy
  • Utilize floating or fixed solar panels
  • Implement a battery energy storage system

This hybrid energy solution is designed to maximize efficiency and resilience. Musayev emphasized that the goal extends beyond generating renewable power; it focuses on optimizing the use of water and energy together, highlighting the interdependence of these crucial resources.

Resource Efficiency Innovations

For instance, by outfitting water pumps with variable frequency drives, water consumption can align with real-time demand, leading to significant reductions in excess energy and water usage. These technologies not only bolster resource efficiency but also enable a data-driven approach to sustainable utility management.

This pilot project marks the start of a deeper collaboration with ADSEA. Musayev stressed that both organizations stand to gain: ADSEA will lower its carbon footprint, while SOCAR Green will gain invaluable insights into scalable hybrid systems. This partnership sets a standard for public-private cooperation in Azerbaijan’s decarbonization efforts.

Looking Ahead

Crucially, the technical assessment phase has already commenced, and expectations are elevated. If successful, this project could serve as a model for broader implementation within Azerbaijan and neighboring Central Asian countries. This forward-thinking vision illustrates SOCAR’s aim to export clean energy expertise and lead by example in the region.

SOCAR Green is charged with leading renewable energy investments that encompass solar, wind, and emerging clean technologies.
