Global chemical leader SABIC has expanded its sustainable materials portfolio with the global launch of LNP™ Elcrin™ DC0051RC1. The engineering plastic contains 75% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content and is formulated with a polycarbonate (PC) resin base, representing the company’s first commercialized PCR-based, carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic compound.
The material is specifically engineered to improve product circularity without sacrificing raw engineering performance, making it highly applicable for high-strength structural enclosures in the consumer electronics sector, such as lightweight laptop and tablet housings.
Typically, blending high concentrations of recycled content alongside carbon fiber reinforcement introduces severe processing and performance trade-offs. SABIC’s specialties formulation team bypassed these structural hurdles to deliver several critical mechanical and environmental benefits:
Thin-Wall Flame Retardancy: The material achieves a stringent UL94 V0 flame retardancy rating at just 0.8 millimeters. Maintaining this level of fire safety with recycled inputs is a noted industry challenge, and this thin-wall performance enables significant component lightweighting.
Eco-Friendly Chemistry: The formulation relies entirely on a non-chlorinated and non-brominated flame retardant package, systematically lowering environmental and toxicological profiles.
Structural Precision: The compound exhibits high tensile modulus, excellent dimensional stability, and very low warpage, ensuring large consumer electronic shells maintain precise physical tolerances during high-volume assembly.
The launch highlights SABIC’s broader corporate objective to ensure that alternative, upcycled, and bio-based plastics can actively compete with primary fossil-fuel polymers on a pure performance basis.
