Romgaz agrees in principle to acquire Azomures

Romania’s natural gas producer, Romgaz, has reached a preliminary agreement to acquire Azomures, the country’s largest fertiliser manufacturer, from the Swiss-based Ameropa group. The deal, which includes finalized terms on price and structure, is expected to be completed within three to four months. This acquisition strategically positions Romgaz as a major domestic gas consumer just as it prepares to begin production at the Neptun Deep offshore project in the Black Sea.

Interim Prime Minister and acting Energy Minister Ilie Bolojan welcomed the move, calling it an “essential step” for reviving Romania’s chemical industry and securing resources for the agricultural sector. The takeover is seen as a priority for the government, aimed at ensuring the superior utilization of domestic natural gas within national industries.

Negotiations are expected to be finalized by the end of May 2026, pending approval from the Board of Directors. By absorbing Azomures, Romgaz not only preserves significant industrial capacity but also creates a guaranteed outlet for the gas it expects to produce alongside partner OMV Petrom in the coming years.
