Romania backs solar with €65 million boost from modernisation fund

Romania has announced a major investment of approximately 325 million lei (around €65 million) from the EU-backed Modernisation Fund to support the construction of solar parks across 47 public institutions. The initiative aims to promote self-sufficiency and reduce energy costs in key community facilities, including schools, hospitals, and local government buildings.

The projects will result in a total installed capacity of 47.43 MW, directly contributing to Romania’s clean energy goals. According to the Ministry of Energy, some institutions are expected to meet up to 70% of their energy needs through the new solar installations.

With over 1,000 contracts signed, the Modernisation Fund is becoming the most powerful investment instrument for the future of our communities. Each contract means more than a signature – it means a commitment to an energy-independent, clean and modern Romania.

The new support falls under Key Program 1, which has now reached 1,010 signed contracts totalling 2.7 billion lei (€551 million), with 2.4 billion lei (€485 million) in direct financing from the Modernisation Fund. The programme’s total installed capacity now exceeds 390 MW.

Following the success of the public sector initiative, Romania has recently launched a similar call for companies, further expanding its drive towards energy transition and decentralised renewable energy production.
