ORLEN Acquires 216 MW Hybrid Solar & Wind Project in Poland

ORLEN Group has just secured a landmark deal to acquire a 216 MW hybrid renewable energy complex in Kazimierz Biskupi, marking a significant milestone in Poland’s green energy transition. By pairing a large-scale solar farm with wind turbines, the project aims to power nearly 143,000 households annually.

ORLEN New Power has completed the acquisition of rights to the Kazimierz Biskupi project from Polish developers ONDE and Neo Energy Group. The new complex, situated in the Greater Poland region, brings together two major forms of green energy generation: Solar Power: A 180 MW photovoltaic (PV) farm. Wind Power: A 36 MW wind farm utilizing nine state-of-the-art Vestas V136 4MW turbines. In total, the hybrid plant is projected to generate roughly 315 GWh of clean electricity every year.

One of the project’s most innovative features is its use of a regulatory mechanism known as cable pooling. Historically, solar and wind installations required separate, dedicated connections to the national grid. Because wind and solar generation tend to peak at different times, these independent connections often sit heavily underutilized.By employing cable pooling, ORLEN’s new facility allows both the wind and solar farms to share the same grid connection infrastructure.

The Kazimierz Biskupi facility is located just 8 kilometers away from the ORLEN Group’s already established Kleczew Solar & Wind complex. Together, these two sites will form a massive 485 MW onshore renewable energy cluster.

The integration of hybrid wind-solar assets, advanced cable pooling mechanisms, and regional grid optimization strategies for utility-scale clean energy clusters will be key topics of discussion at next year’s upcoming Go Net Zero Summit- Central and Eastern Europe
