Energy major OMV Petrom has secured a landmark green energy supply deal, signing the largest physical solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in Romania’s history.
Under the terms of the record-breaking PPA, OMV Petrom will purchase 50% of the electricity generated by the newly licensed 126-megawatt-peak (MWp) Văcărești solar park in Dâmbovița County. The long-term off-take agreement is scheduled to take effect in January 2027, significantly bolstering the energy company’s access to domestic, clean electricity.
The Văcărești facility represents a massive addition to Romania’s renewable grid. Operating at full capacity, the park is projected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 50,000 households annually. By procuring half of this output, OMV Petrom will play a direct role in supporting a project that prevents approximately 48,600 tonnes of CO₂ emissions from entering the atmosphere each year.
The solar park supplying OMV Petrom was developed by DRI, the European renewables arm of the Ukrainian group DTEK. DRI recently secured the commercial operating license for the Văcărești site, which was brought to fruition utilizing a €60 million non-recourse financing package from UniCredit and Garanti BBVA.
By partnering with DRI, OMV Petrom is tapping into one of Romania’s fastest-growing green energy pipelines. The launch of the Văcărești park pushes DRI’s total operational capacity in the country to 299MW. Alongside the newly operational solar park, DRI’s portfolio includes the massive Glodeni solar complex and the 60MW Ruginoasa onshore wind farm, with future plans to deploy battery energy storage systems (BESS) across the nation.
