Ferrero and Ineos Styrolution collaboration to explore advanced recycling options for packaging

Ineos Styrolution, a Germany-based styrenics supplier with focus on styrene monomer, polystyrene and ABS Standard and styrenic specialities, has entered into an agreement with Italy-based Ferrero to explore the feasibility of using its advanced recycling concepts such as depolymerization for future packaging solutions. Ineos Styrolution says its aim is to develop a process to convert complex plastic scrap back to fully recyclable materials that comply with food-contact regulations. The company’s recycling concept also aims to contribute to a circular economy based on the depolymerization process that converts postconsumer plastic scrap back to its monomers, Ineos Styrolution states in a press release on its agreement with Ferrero.

Ferrero says the company is “pleased to work with Ineos Styrolution to explore opportunities for future packaging solutions” that are not available in practice and at scale today. The company says it is interested to see whether Ineos Styrolution’s approach can offer a circular solution and support Ferrero’s commitment to make all of its packaging 100 percent reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

We are pleased to work with Ferrero and are convinced that chemical recycling can produce high-quality recycled plastics, while reducing postconsumer waste and reducing the use of valuable raw materials at the same time.
