Engie and French partners collaborate on energy sources of the future

French energy giant Engie is teaming up with compatriot logistics and shipping company CMA CGM to champion industrial-scale production of synthetic methane and BioLNG. - Upstreamonline

The companies plan to share expertise and R&D, most notably in key technologies such as carbon capture and green hydrogen production, to facilitate the development of “the energy sources of the future”.

CMA CGM and Engie are establishing a long-term strategic and industrial co-operation focused on the production of decarbonised fuels.

An initial project to produce liquefied biomethane (BioLNG) for shipping has already been launched by the companies at the Port of Marseille, in partnership with TotalEnergies and Metropole Aix-Marseille-Provence.

Engie is leading further synthetic methane production industrial projects in which CMA CGM will have the possibility to invest, including by means of multi-year purchase commitments.

These projects will harness various technologies, such as pyro-gasification or methanation using green hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide.

The partnership also covers the analysis of future regulations, as well as efforts to raise awareness of the benefits of BioLNG and synthetic methane for the decarbonisation of the marine industry.

Liquefied natural gas can reduce sulphur oxide emissions by 99%, fine particle emissions by 91% and nitrogen oxide emissions by 92%, Engie noted.

The CMA CGM Group currently has 20 “e-methane ready” vessels equipped with dual-fuel engines and running on LNG, which helped the company reduce its overall carbon emissions by 4% last year, and it will have 44 “e-methane” vessels by the end of 2024.

The dual-fuel gas-power technology developed by CMA CGM and currently using LNG is already capable of using BioLNG and synthetic methane.

Biomethane can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 67% compared to very low sulphur fuel oil on a well-to-wake basis (entire value chain). Meanwhile, synthetic methane will eliminate the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions, added the duo.
