Amazon buys up half the energy produced by Shell, Eneco offshore wind farm

Energy giant Shell and Mitsubishi Corp-owned utility Eneco have reached a deal with online retailer Amazon to buy half the electricity produced by their joint offshore windfarm. Source: DutchNews

Amazon will take 380 megawatts of capacity from the Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm from 2024, the two companies said in a statement.

Amazon has been under pressure to reduce its environmental footprint and has pledged to use only energy from sustainable sources by 2025.

The Hollandse Kust Noord wind farm, some 18 kilometres off the Dutch coast at Egmond aan Zee, will have 69 turbines when completed and is described as ‘subsidy free’.

The CrossWinds consortium said last year, when it was awarded the contract, that the wind farm would produce enough electricity to power one million homes.
