Aker Solutions has inked a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract with Norway's Marine Energy Test Centre (METCentre) to test a pioneering subsea power system that could revolutionize offshore wind farms. The project involves deploying Aker Solutions' Subsea Collector technology in METCentre's offshore wind test area near Karmøy, Norway, initially featuring two floating turbines, with plans to expand to seven by 2026.

The Subsea Collector introduces an innovative approach by connecting multiple wind turbines in a star configuration, deviating from the conventional daisy chain pattern. This design flexibility allows for reduced cable lengths, lower installation costs, and potentially up to 10% cost savings on a 1GW floating wind farm. The system components include a 66kV wet mate connection system from Benestad, subsea switchgear with supervisory control and data acquisition by ABB, and installation by Windstaller Alliance - a collaboration between Aker Solutions, DeepOcean, and Solstad Offshore.

Jo Kjetil Krabbe, EVP of Power Solutions at Aker Solutions, emphasizes the industry collaboration behind the Subsea Collector, aiming to address current challenges in the offshore wind sector. METCentre's CEO, Arvid Nesse, notes that the project will shape the infrastructure of future large-scale floating wind parks, leveraging Norwegian subsea expertise.

The Subsea Collector builds on Aker Solutions' success in similar technologies and their experience in subsea power solutions, including projects like Equinor's Hywind Tampen. METCentre, renowned for testing marine renewable energy technologies, will contribute to developing Norway's robust supply chain, benefiting both test customers and the broader offshore wind industry.

This groundbreaking project represents a step forward in the development of next-generation subsea power systems, enhancing cost-efficiency for offshore wind developments. Aker Solutions aims to leverage its extensive experience to provide reliable and cost-effective solutions, contributing to the advancement of the offshore wind sector.
