KazTransOil sets record for energy efficiency in oil transportation

KazTransOil JSC has achieved a historic low in energy intensity for oil transportation, recording just 3.7 tons of conventional fuel per cargo turnover of one million tons of oil per kilometer. This figure is 2.4 times lower than in 2010. Through consistent efforts in energy management, the company is making significant strides towards sustainable development and reducing its carbon footprint.

Since 2011, KazTransOil JSC has been implementing a gradual energy efficiency model: starting from the establishment of process mode services to incorporating the international standard ISO 50001 into its core business processes. Today, energy management at KazTransOil is more than just monitoring resource consumption; it has evolved into a strategic tool for operational sustainability.

Electricity and Natural Gas — A Focused Approach

The primary focus lies on the efficient use of electricity for pumping units, which accounts for 25% of the total volume, and natural gas used in oil heating furnaces, representing over 65%, in tons of equivalent fuel (TEF). Over the past 14 years, the total energy savings have amounted to 1.9 billion tenge.

Optimization of the Temperature Regime — The “Hot” Effect

A key initiative involved optimizing the temperature regime along the strategically vital Atyrau-Samara oil pipeline. By switching from the Mangyshlak oil mixture, which has complicated rheology and a positive pour point, to Kashagan oil with a negative pour point, the company was able to turn off heating furnaces during the warmer months.

In 2021, oil heating was necessary year-round; however, by 2024, the heating furnaces were deactivated for five consecutive months, resulting in savings of over 10 million m³ of natural gas. Overall, since 2022, gas savings exceeded 25 million m³.

Saving Resources — Preserving the Future

KazTransOil’s strategy is not a one-off initiative but a systematic journey towards an energy-efficient future. Concrete figures, substantial savings, and a positive environmental impact demonstrate that sustainable development is not merely a slogan, but a tangible reality.
