KazMunayGas, KBR, and KazFoodProducts Ink Strategic Partnership for SAF Production

Recently in Astana, on the sidelines of the Regional Environmental Summit (RES 2026), a tripartite term sheet has been signed between JSC NC KazMunayGas (KMG), the American corporation Kellogg Brown & Root LLC (KBR), and KazFoodProducts LLP (KFP). The document outlines the key parameters for collaboration on the project. The project is to build a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production plant in Kazakhstan.

The agreement has been signed by Asset Magauov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of KMG; Ahmad Aman, Senior Vice President of KBR; and Zhandos Yesenbay, Deputy General Director for Development at KFP. Additionally, KazMunayGas and KazFoodProducts formalised bilateral agreements. These documents detail the joint contributions and division of responsibilities within the project.

The signing of these documents marks the transition to the development of project documentation. The formation of the Process Design Package (PDP) is slated for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2027. This is necessary to adapt the PureSAF™ technology, which includes the Alcohol-to-Jet process, to domestic feedstock. It is also required to determine the precise technical specifications for future production. Furthermore, based on the results of the PDP, a Final Investment Decision on the commencement of construction will be made.

Within the framework of the project, KBR will serve as the technology licensor and engineering contractor. The initiative is aimed at the deep decarbonisation of the aviation industry. It also fulfils the Republic of Kazakhstan’s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The implementation of this project will allow for the integration of Kazakhstani agricultural feedstock into high-tech production chains for low-carbon fuels. I am confident that the expertise of a global technology leader like KBR and the resources of the agro-industrial holding KFP will create the necessary synergy for the successful launch of SAF production in our country,” emphasised A. Magauov.
