Japan’s Toyo Engineering launches modernization of Turkmenistan’s Gyyanly polymer plant

Japanese industrial company Toyo Engineering Corporation has launched a large-scale modernization project at Turkmenistan’s Gyyanly Polymer Plant. The initiative was announced by Tetsuji Miyazaki, director of the company’s office in Turkmenistan, during the “White City Ashgabat” conference.

The modernization effort will be executed in two distinct phases to optimize existing facility infrastructure. The first phase focuses on foundational engineering work, technical inspections, the procurement of new equipment to replace outdated installations, and preliminary dismantling operations. The second phase will center on resolving technical constraints and successfully launching the upgraded production lines. Miyazaki noted that the project follows two high-level strategic meetings held last year between Toyo Engineering executives and Turkmenistan’s President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to map out long-term petrochemical cooperation.

Located on the Caspian coast in the Balkan region, the Gyyanly Polymer Plant was originally commissioned in 2018 as a landmark petrochemical development valued at over $3.4 billion. Built by a consortium comprising Toyo Engineering, Hyundai Engineering, and LG International, the massive complex is engineered to process up to 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually. At peak capacity, it produces roughly 380,000 tons of polyethylene and 80,000 tons of polypropylene per year. The facility serves as a vital pillar in Turkmenistan’s national strategy to scale up value-added downstream gas processing and expand its polymer export networks via the nearby Turkmenbashi International Seaport.
