Germany and the Czech Republic enhance collaboration on hydrogen infrastructure

Germany and the Czech Republic have established a new bilateral working group aimed at strengthening collaboration on cross-border hydrogen initiatives, the German Ministry of Economy announced on Monday.

The initiative focuses on developing a shared hydrogen infrastructure, with particular attention to the proposed Czech-German Hydrogen Interconnector (CGHI). The CGHI project envisions converting existing natural gas pipelines into hydrogen-ready infrastructure capable of bidirectional transport. Once completed, it will link the national hydrogen networks of both countries, support Germany’s planned core hydrogen network, and enable future hydrogen exports to the Czech Republic.

The working group brings together ministers from both countries, national regulatory authorities, and key network operators including GASCADE, Open Grid Europe, NaTran, and NET4GAS. Its primary objectives are to facilitate information exchange, coordinate joint planning, and accelerate the development of cross-border hydrogen infrastructure.

The move builds on the memorandum of understanding on hydrogen infrastructure signed by Germany and the Czech Republic on April 25, 2025, formalizing their commitment to closer energy cooperation.
