Croatia is officially hunting for deep underground “vaults” to lock away industrial pollution.
The Ministry of Economy has signed a €2.7 million grant to fund a massive research project aimed at Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). The project is 100% funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The goal is to find safe geological spots both on land and under the Adriatic Sea where carbon dioxide (CO₂) can be injected and stored forever. By keeping the gas trapped deep in the earth, it stays out of the atmosphere, helping to fight climate change.
Officials say this isn’t just about storage; it’s about making Croatia a regional leader in clean energy. By finding these storage sites, Croatia can also better develop geothermal energy, creating a “double win” for the environment.
