In April 2025, Alsico embarked on a collaboration with Sixone to transform old polyester-blend workwear from its ARX garment collection facility into polyester chips on a large scale.
After several months of research and testing, this partnership has successfully produced its inaugural closed-loop fabric composed entirely of recycled materials.
Sixone’s innovative technology converts post-consumer textiles into polyester chips, which serve as the foundation for Alsico’s new garment.
Utilizing a distinctive molecular analysis process, the company identifies the optimal recycling conditions for each type of textile, allowing it to extract pure polyester from chemically complex blends.
This method enables Sixone to surpass traditional fiber and color limitations, breathing new life into materials previously deemed unrecyclable.
The final garment, developed under Alsico’s ARX initiative—which focuses on rework, repair, care, and recycling—has undergone rigorous testing and validation to ensure it meets the market and performance standards set by the workwear manufacturer.
A team of engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has engineered a recyclable yarn made from polyethylene, offering a scalable solution to the global challenge of textile waste. Detailed in ACS Materials Letters, the research was led by Svetlana Boriskina, a research scientist in MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, alongside first author SeongHyeon Kim and co-authors Duo Xu, Volodymyr Korolovych, Domingo Flores-Hernandez, Kaniz Moriam, and Daniel Braconnier.
The MIT team demonstrated that garments crafted from the engineered yarn can be melted down at the end of their lifecycle and respun into fresh fiber or molded into solid plastic hardware, such as buttons and belt buckles.
