Russian farmers have increased their purchases of mineral fertilizers in the spring planting campaign by 206 thousand tons compared to last year.
In total, Russian agricultural producers purchased 1.2 million tons of mineral fertilizers in 2019. The accumulated resources exceed 1.4 million tons including balances for 2018.
“We hope that the price situation on the fertilizer market will allow domestic farmers to purchase them in the required volumes. We are constantly monitoring the situation together with the FAS and the Ministry of Industry and will take appropriate measures if necessary,” said Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev during a conference call.
The head of the Ministry of Agriculture in mid-March at a government meeting asked the Prime Minister to instruct the FAS to pay attention to the issue of containing mineral fertilizer prices. According to him, at the beginning of the year, prices on the market of fertilizers for individual items rose to 14%.
Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting on mineral fertilizer prices on the 18th of March. The Prime Minister then said that the issue of prices for fertilizers needed to find a balance of interests of producers and agribusiness.
Following the meeting, the head of the FAS Igor Artemyev said that the price of mineral fertilizers on the domestic market of the Russian Federation did not grow much, the reason was, among other things, the rise in export prices for products. In this connection, the proposal was made to introduce protective duties on fertilizers in analogy with petroleum products.
